That was always my frustration with Word Perfect, on DOS and later on Windows. For anyone who encountered WP as their first sophisticated word processor, it's structure and many shortcuts became familiar and they became prductive fans of the product. But it was externally inconsistent. It's commands and workflows were unlike anything else for editing text or text and images at a time where the general text processing tools from simple to full desktop publishing were adopting common command sets and workflows, which were also becoming common in all general apps. I could certainly use WP when necessary, but it was always a jarring experience.
